Underground in Almeria City

Refuges first pic.JPG

The Civil War refuges built for the people of Almeria, as Franco's forces attacked a defenceless civil population with the help of the Hitler's German forces, was little known to us and other visitors until today. Join us to discover the truth of Spain's forgotten city in Franco's times and beyond.

A specialist mining architect gave his time (as did every individual in the city who could help to build the shelter in any spare moment), to hide away the terrified Almerian's who had no defences against the bombing from both land and sea - this was a race against time.

Refuges.JPG

Keith and Artemis imagined how it must have felt to have no lighting at all - pitch black as the bombs were dropped and everyone sat on stone benches at each side of the shelter. "I would have felt afraid just because of the dark", admitted Artemis as the stories unfolded of the times in the shelter. It was forbidden to talk of religion or politics in case a fight broke out, which could have resulted in unbridled chaos within the tension of the tunnels.

Out day trip to Almeria City reveals those secrets, including a visit to the war refuges, with a hope that the atrocities will never repeated again along these shores. Then we can celebrate the freedom we can now experience.

A 70th year birthday party for Fergus, who loves the history of the area and following the refuges experience with the Almeria City tour yesterday. He now celebrates his landmark birthday in the unparalleled Casa Puga, with tapas galore (more than 150 years old - not the tapas, Casa Puga!).

Not to be missed!

The central food market in Almeria is a sensation - newly renovated, it still retains its original flavour. Any delicacies you wish for can be found here. From local olive oil, embutidos, the freshest of seasonal produce and cheese and pickles to blow the taste buds.

A gentle slope upwards over a little time offers 360 views of the city when you reach the top. We at Costa Almeria Tours will take you there. Worth the effort and second only to the Alhambra in Granada and designed by the same architect in its recent history.

New Year's Resolutions with Costa Almeria Tours

Christmas is well over, the tinsel should come down tomorrow, January 6th and the hangovers of Nochevieja - New Year's Eve should finally have subsided, so what about those pesky resolutions?

Well, I've made a very simple resolution that I know is easy to keep - to get out and about and see more of the beauty that is Almeria - it is simple to do, fun and enriches your life and of course gets everybody out enjoying themselves out in the sunshine - within our stunning landscapes, incredible gastronomy and rich and diverse Andalusian culture. This resolution will not be broken, promise. Why not make it yours...

So, I have resolved:

To see more dolphins and to spot a whale if at all possible. Tick.

Costa Almeria Tours are out again on the ocean waves on our Dolphin and Whale watching trips scheduled for February 19th and March 27th, booking now. (Or you can make a date of your choice subject to availability) Click here for full details.

And here is a little tempter from our first Dolphin and Whale watching trip:

To sit in a front row seat at the magnificent Lorca Semana Santa Processions in March. Tick.

For both the reverent and the irreverent, this is a night which will stay with you forever. The equine displays are out of this world. Costa Almeria Tours provides only front row seats, the best seats in town following a sumptuous speciality four course meal with wine. Click on the photo for more details.

To dance the night away at one of the biggest carnival extravaganzas in Spain in Aguilas on February 13th. Tick.

I admit, I have a few more resolutions, which are gong to be a little more tricky to keep! But perhaps I should keep those to myself for now!

In the meantime, Feliz y prospero 2016 to everyone, may your wishes come true! Hasta pronto!

Lesley and blood drinking Geoffrey

Lesley and blood drinking Geoffrey

December 31st 2015

No-one does it quite like Costa Almeria Tours, especially on a fiesta night - Noche Vieja, New Year's Eve, 7-course dinner, copious amounts of wine, cava and grapes in a Spanish run "Secret Spain" fishing village location in Cabo de Gata and  our own rooms to collapse into following the nights revels of family flamenco and guitar - Oh what a night and then we took you home too. Just the seven rooms available and boy did this sell out fast. Thanks to our fab guests, Clive and Ann, Dwight (TT) Beare, the beautiful Tash, Jan, John and James, to besties Geoff and Lesley and mates Rog and Dude, couldn't have made it into the wee hours without you. We love you Don Antonio and Dona Antonia and all our mates at La Isleta del Moro for making it happen! Here's to the best 2016 ever!

Gourmet Christmas Shopping Trip for those who like to lunch

So, it is upon us - the 'soooo' looked forward to, "Goodwill" season of spend, spend, spend on a load of trash. But those of us, who dislike buying "things" which nobody wants, but instead believe food and drink gifts to be the ultimate in cool pressies, Costa Almeria Tours is with you.

We are offering a gourmet delight of food shopping with a little lunch and drinking thrown in. We will transport you from your door (within reason) to the stunning Food Hall full of fresh local produce, we bring the cold boxes with ice for your purchases and follow you around like personal shoppers (and collect your bags and return them to the car). We will also bring you home, following the eating and drinking, shopping fest, so no driving necessary at all...

Lunch of course is at Casa Puga, (standing only, but masses of wine and tapas). Food market first, where we will treat you to a little fish or meat to be cooked on the plancha in the great bar withing the market! All inclusive, 48 euros per person (33 euros if you just want a ride and no lunch). Transport, nibbles, lunch with wine or beer! Happy Christmas gastronomers, this is the way to escape the Christmas demons!

All this takes place on Thursday, December 17th in Almeria city - no deposit necessary. Just email Jackie with your reservations or any questions at info@costaalmeriatours.com or call anytime on (0034) 646 760 389

Bah humbug - yes! We'll eat them, thanks

Fab day on boat trip in Aguillas

boat_trip-1.jpg

Starting with a Cava breakfast on board the 30 foot sail boat, the day was set to be great. 10 of us set sail for the open sea and had the time of our lives. After a couple of hours enjoying the beautifaul coastline we had our first swim in 8 metre dept crystal clear water. When we passed the cape of Aguillas, the wind got up to 5 knots so we opened the main sail and took off in total quite. A dolphin kept us company as we rounded home and after another hour had our second swim. The day was complete after docking back at the harbour and the start of our fabulous lunch at a quayside cafe where we ate like kings. What a day.
